We Love Kate Spade
We’ve loved the Kate Spade brand for a long time. But, what we’re loving even more is the announcement of a new line, Kate Spade Saturday, targeting a younger demographic and at a lower price point. We’re excited about the news and looking forward to seeing what this means for the in-store environment. Kate Spade New York stores are known for the brand’s signature storytelling style and colorful brand personality, and we’re hoping “Saturday” will bring the same upbeat energy. Stay tuned; you know we’ll be watching.

The desk of…Steve Boreman, Senior Designer, Brand Communications

1. National Cartoonists Society mug—a proud member of the organization, Steve drinks far too much coffee from this.
2. A collection of misshapen M&M’S candies dating back to 2005, found or received as gifts, with a note reading “DO NOT EAT!”
3. A thank-you gift from a Polynesian-themed resort gift shop project: a souvenir tiki.
4. A cartoon scrawled on a napkin, saved for sentimental reasons—complete with dust.
5. A digital drawing tablet for high-tech napkin sketches.

And here’s a little about the man behind this desk…

Savoring the Flavors of Toronto

From our offices in Columbus, Ohio, a taste of Europe is just one hour away. We’re talking about Toronto, a bustling cosmopolitan city of 5 million that combines British heritage with a saucy dose of French je ne sais quoi. We recently visited and found a city in the midst of a condo building-boom, thriving neighborhoods of smart shops and great restaurants (what recession?). One of the highlights was a visit to The Distillery, which was, not surprisingly, an old whiskey distillery that quelled stateside thirsts during U.S. Prohibition. The maze of brick buildings has been converted to an intriguing complex of artisan shops. A Taste of Quebec was a cool, cavernous space that offered Canadian artisanal cheeses from small producers. We were treated to both samples and stories by the convivial owner who actually cooks up specialties on the weekends for customers. The tiered, interior-lit cases presented cheese at its loveliest, and we learned that everything tastes better when a story accompanies it. Read more…

Get Burtified

Image via burtsbees.com

In celebration of Earth Day, Burt’s Bees launched FindYourBurt.com, a microsite where guests can explore the world of Burt and learn how to be more eco-conscious. Site visitors become “Burtified” by uploading their picture and adding the company founder’s signature beard and cap. Visitors can then share the fun with their friends by posting on Facebook. What a great way to use education and personalization to support an environmental message and turn visitors into brand ambassadors!

Find Your Inner Burt or become a Fan of Burt’s Bees on Facebook.

What can you do with 111 plastic Coke bottles?

Everyone loves the Navy Chair by Emeco for its classic industrial look and super strength. After all, the chair was designed in 1944 to withstand the wear and tear on WWII submarines. Clearly, it was engineered to last for a long time—150 years to be exact. As an added bonus, it uses 80% recycled aluminum content. Amazing right?!

Emeco partnered with Coca-Cola to reinterpret the classic and much loved #1006 Navy Chair. In 2006, Coca-Cola’s new recycling plant in South Carolina was looking for innovative ways to reuse plastic bottles and show the public the value of recycling. Coca-Cola wanted everyone to know that beautiful items can be produced from recycled plastic.
